Plumbing emergencies can happen at any time. And it’s important to know when you should call in professional plumbers. You can avoid most plumbing problems by taking preventative measures like checking for leaks and clogs regularly. However, in some situations, you’ll want to call in a professional immediately.

Table of Contents

  • Low Water Pressure
  • Dripping Faucets
  • Clogged Drains
  • Water Leaks
  • High Water Bills
  • Smelly Water
  • Damaged Pipes

Low Water Pressure

A common concern among homeowners is low water pressure. Several issues, including clogged pipes, can cause this. Trying to clear a clog with the proper tools can lead to even bigger problems, such as contaminating your drinking water. A plumber can handle these types of issues with ease and precision. Leaking pipes are another cause of low water pressure. For instance, professionals in plumbing repair in Dallas can repair these leaks and restore your water pressure to normal. If your water pressure drops suddenly, it could signify a mainline water break. This is something that should be handled immediately, as it can also cause damage to your home and appliances.

Dripping Faucets

A little drip may seem harmless initially, but it can quickly add hundreds of wasted gallons annually. Plus, dripping faucets can cause water damage to your home’s fixtures and lead to mold and mildew growth.

Sometimes, the leak is caused by loose parts that need to be tightened. A plumber can use professional tools to fix the problem and prevent future leaks quickly.

If you are gone for a long time during the winter, consider leaving at least one faucet dripping. This will help prevent your pipes from freezing and allow water to flow through them while they thaw.

Clogged Drains

Clogged drains indicate that it’s time to call a professional plumber. Clogged drains are a serious issue that can lead to wastewater backup and damage your pipes and sewer system. They can also harm your health, releasing foul odors and making using your sinks, tubs, and showers difficult. Many causes of clogged drains include soap scum, hair, food waste, flushing tampons, paper towels, or other items down the toilet. Heavy rainfall and storms can also cause clogs by washing away or damaging parts of the drain pipe. If your clogged drains are persistent and no amount of plunging seems to help, it’s time to call a plumber. They’ll be able to use an auger (a long and flexible snake) that is much more effective than your old wire coat hanger.

Water Leaks

Leaking pipes are a huge problem that can lead to major water damage. A professional plumber is the only one that can properly inspect and repair your leaks. Even a small leak left unattended can become a big issue, so it’s important to call a plumber immediately. They can use special tools to locate and fix the leak quickly before it gets worse. If you suspect a leak, first ensure all faucets are turned off and survey your home for signs of water leaking, such as puddles or dark stains on the ceiling or walls. Next, check your water meter and write down the numbers. Come back in an hour, and if the numbers have changed, you probably leak.

High Water Bills

There’s nothing worse than opening your bi-monthly water bill and seeing that it’s significantly higher than usual. It’s important to track your water usage to spot a sudden bill spike as soon as possible.

High water bills are often the result of easy-to-fix problems like leaks. A dripping faucet or toilet can waste 11,000 gallons per year, equivalent to more than 70 loads of laundry or 290 five-minute showers.

Another cause of high water bills is changing habits. Did you have guests staying over, water your lawn more often this summer, or change any other routine behaviors that could account for a high water bill? If so, this is a sign that it’s time to call a plumber.

Smelly Water

Some smells don’t go away with a few toilet flushes or hot water. If you notice that your home’s water is giving off a rotten egg or sewage-like scent, it is time to call a plumber immediately. These foul odors indicate that your drainpipes are clogged, causing bacteria to build up in your water supply. A professional plumber can use special tools to find the source of the problem and fix it.

The first thing to do is determine if the odor only affects your hot or cold water supply, as this will help the plumber narrow down the source of the odor. If the odor only comes from one or the other, it’s a localized issue with that area’s fixtures.

Damaged Pipes

The pipes that run throughout your home or business get a lot of use and can be vulnerable to damage. When they are damaged, they can cause water seepage that damages your property. You should always call a licensed professional plumber to repair or replace your pipes. Doing it yourself can lead to more damage and cost you more money in the long run.
